A very rare aggressive cancer that usually manifests in skin lesions and infiltrates the lymph system. Usually considered a form of leukemia, it bears resemblances to lymphoma as well. Currently a chemotherapy regimen similar to that for AML followed by bone marrow/stem cell transplant seems to provide the best prognosis.
Because BPDCN is so rare, there are not sufficient data to give survival rates. Chemotherapy will often produce remission, but relapse rates were very high. Since 2006, the standard treatment has been a bone marrow transplant immediately after the first remission. This treatment has been successful, but there has not been enough time to accumulate 5-year survival rates with modern treatments.
